Everyone has changes they want to make. On January 1st, we set our resolutions and intentions. As Summer approaches, we swear we’ll get in shape. Once we’re done with Halloween, we promise ourselves we’ll get everyone’s Christmas gifts organized and slowly start purchasing so that December isn’t a crunch.

But change isn’t easy. Life gets in the way. Some way, some how, – no matter our good intentions – these goals don’t come to fruition.

So the question becomes, what can we do to fix this?

Changing a habit is hard work, but it’s doable. And not in a generic, “You can do anything you put your mind to!” type of way. Change takes time, dedication, and effort. And most of all, it takes strategy.

Consider these 4 points when deciding to make a change:

What’s your motivation for changing your habits?

There’s an old saying that change comes from within, and that’s true. You can’t be successful in major life changes unless it’s something you want for yourself, first and foremost. If you want to get your life more organized, you can’t do it for your spouse, your family or your friends. You have to truly want it for yourself.

What’s holding you back?

You’ve determined you want this, you truly want it for yourself and you’re committed to the change. Yay! But now ask yourself, if you want it so bad, why haven’t you already done it? Determining what factors are holding you back from this change will be important as you move forward, so when you encounter these roadblocks you will recognize them for what they are.

What do you want to address most?

It’s often easy to get distracted by smaller goals when you’re working on a large life change. It’s easy to stay home and get caught up on your laundry pile instead of going out to the gym to get in shape. Don’t allow yourself to make excuses. Schedule the appropriate time you need for the large goal, and don’t miss your target.

What are the skills you need to be successful?

Sometimes the simple truth is you can’t get ahead without a hand. Reach out for help. Hiring a personal trainer takes the guess work out of your exercise regime, just as hiring a dietician ensures you have meal plans laid out for you. Make an appointment with a travel agent to get pricing on that big overseas trip, so you know how much you need to save. Getting the right information surrounding your goals ensures that you can be successful, as you gather the skills and knowledge needed to make your goals reality.
